Where were you when you heard the announcement? I was scrolling facebook groups, looking for wedding opportunities when someone shared the photos to a photographer group. Everyone, from beginner to pro, shared their thoughts on the images.
The speculation of who took them started immediately. NDA clients, like Taylor Swift, are coveted amongst the facebook wedding photographers. In the comments, the tone shifted from “who took the pictures?” to “I’m offering free wedding coverage to Taylor, hope she picks me!” in a matter of minutes. I’m a humble photographer, I know Taylor isn’t going to choose me. (unless she’s reading this, then hey girl, have you been to Sun Valley?) Instead, let’s break down the photos and learn from them. I’m sure this photoshoot will be setting trends in photography until the royal wedding.
A lesson in framing through color and exclusion
In the first photo Ms. Swift shared, we see the happy couple, surrounded by a fabulous floral spread. Around the florals, trees, vines, greenery and fences are all masked over with more green. This styled choice, while controversial, employed some basic photography elements. The photographer utilized framing and emphasis with the pops of pink and white and the exclusion of other colors on the edges of the picture.
Framing is exactly what it sounds like -creating a frame so the eye of the viewer is drawn to a specific part of the image.
Emphasis is just that, something we focus on because of the elements employed by the photographer.
This color analysis shows shades of green prominent in the photo. These greens are accented with pink from the flours.
A lesson in Contrast and Dark to Light
In the second photo, we see the same editing style, but now we’re getting a better look at the skin tones, a hot topic amongst portait photographers. Taylor’s skin is an even pale pink. Travis has a similar skin tone in his face, but is more orange in his arms, presumably from long hours on the football field. I’m sure this created somewhat of a challenge for the mystery photographer.
I’ve heard more than one pro photographer say it, greens are going to be big in 2026. Desaturated oranges and yellows let a green like this shine, and it’s well complimented by the terracotta orange, pinks and reds in the highlights of this image.
The contrast in this image comes form Travis’ skin and the deep green of the background create the most contrast in this image, but Taylor’s dress and Travis’ shirt create contrast, as well as the greenery and sky we see behind our subjects.
Ring
The goal of this photo is to show off the ring. The gorgeous gold band and gargantuan gem are placed on a thirds line. If I were guessing, the photographer left Taylor’s watch in the frame to employ the principal of balance.
We also see contrast with the brigth shiny ring, and darker background.
Pyramid
In this image of their embrace, the photographer has elected to use the florals as a frame a second time. There’s less of an obvious green overlay and we can more clearly see the candle-lit floral chandelier above their heads. It also seems like there are some flash shadows, so mystery photographer was likely using some flash for this image. Lastly, the florals create a kind of pyramid, with Taylor’s head being the peak.
Here’s a color breakdown from the image. I love the pink popping in with the deep blue & green.
floral frames, flash, and congratulations to the happy couple.
One last time, we see an obvious floral frame. That shadows behind the flowers at the bottom indicate some flash being used. Taylor and travis are on a bottom third.
We’re back with the pops of pink, but this image is overall more green. The photographer is using the texture in the plants to create some movement and interest outside of the subject. Taylor and Travis are centered and surrounded by white pillows, creating a decent contrast from the green background.
I may not be Taylor’s photographer, but I could be yours!
